Ageing is an inevitable change for all living organisms. Most people go panic about getting old. It's not the aging, but the consequences of aging which troubles them. By following the principles of ayurveda it is possible to slow down the process of aging, restore physical and mental strength and prevent the consequences of aging up to certain extent. Ayurveda pays special attention to the aged people as it aims in healthy aging and not mere longevity or extended life expectancy lacking robustness. The elderly people need extra care and love to keep them going on and on. Aging generally brings with it certain unavoidable things like loss of energy, loss of ability of the body for its regular functioning and a feel of insecurity and diffidence that life and the world needs them no more.

Ayurveda, the Indian traditional holistic health science has got the potential for prevention of diseases by promotion of health and management of diseases occurring in old age. It has a focused branch called Ras¡yana(Rejuvenation) which deals with the problems related to ageing and methods to counter the same. Ras¡yana in Ayurveda is a unique therapeutic methodology to delay ageing and to minimize the intensity of problems occuring this degenerative phase of one's life.

Reasons behind the loss of strength during old age:

Each individual has a unique body set up (dhatus or the constituents of human body according to Ayurveda) and his/her health depends upon the balance between the Ayurvedic body types or Doshas namely vata, pitta and kapha and the condition of Saptadhatu (seven dhatus). With aging, the vata constituent gets aggravated due to stress, strain, psychological weakness, imbalanced nutrition etc. Vata aggravation leads to inappropriate functioning of metabolism, respiration, digestion and the process of excretion, leading to health problems like heart disorders, musculoskeletal ailments, diabetes, hypertension, rheumatic illness, Parkinson’s disease, cardiac disabilities, Alzheimer’s syndrome, depression and much more.

Kandamkulathy Ayurveda Hospital provides Extensive Geriatric Care for :

Arthritis : Arthritis related Body pain, major and minor joint pains.

Respiratory Diseases : Breathing difficulty, Asthma, Allergic Respiratory Diseases, Smoking related respiratory complaints.

Alzhemer’s Disease : Alzheimer’s is a disease that refers to the developing deterioration of the brain. Slow and steady loss of memory, poor cerebral ability, mental deterioration and change in personality are generally the predominant symptoms connected to the disease. Ayurveda carries the ability to treat Alzheimer’s, though the treatment does not promise a complete cure. As a matter of fact, no field of medicine has a complete cure to offer Alzheimer’s patients, as of today. According to the principles of Ayurveda, Alzheimer’s is caused as a result of the imbalance in vata – this imbalance is quite common as a person begins to grow in age. Alzheimer’s disease affects the vata – in the tissues of the central nervous system of the body – mainly the brain which then slowly becomes imbalanced. Herbs such as Brahmi and Ashwagandha that serve as nerve tonics are mainly used in treating Alzheimer’s disease through the science of Ayurveda.

Parkinsons Disease : According to Ayurveda, Parkinsons is a Vata ailment that is chronic, with symptoms worsening over time. The disease has been described in ayurvedic texts as Kampavata (Kampa “ tremor, vata “ metabolic derangement predisposing to this neurologic and mental disease).Parkinsons disease usually affects people over the age of 65 years. Ancient Ayurvedic scripts suggest existence of such a disease more than 2000 to 3000 years ago.Ayurveda works on the principle of achieving balance among three main doshas “ Vata, pitta and kapha. Vata governs the air and body movement. According to ayurveda, the Parkinsons disease is caused by an imbalance of the Vata Dosha, which is the presence of aggravated air in the brain. In the course of time, the aggravated air corrodes the area of the brain that controls involuntary movements, giving rise to Parkinsons symptoms. There is no complete cure for Parkinsons disease. Ayurvedic medicine has shown several medical trials that can help in controlling the symptoms great extent, with hardly any side effects.

Degenerative Diseases : As the age passes the body tissues degenerates gradually. In Ayurveda it is called as Kaalaja Jaraa (Natural Ageing). This is physiological & controlled by various systems the body. But if degeneration starts early it is pathological & leads to many diseases such as osteoarthritis, cataract, Degenerative disc disease, dementia, baldness, graying of hair, Hardening of blood vessel, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, Diabetes etc. Ayurveda treatment arrests the process of degeneration & helps in regeneration of soft tissue damages and also helps in prevention of disc prolapse or disc rupture.

Life Style Diseases : "Lifestyle diseases" known, internationally, as ‘non-communicable diseases’ (NCD’s) or ‘chronic diseases of lifestyle’ (CDL) emerge from inappropriate relationship of people with their environment. These are a group of diseases that share similar risk factors, which may be due to exposure over many decades, unhealthy diets, smoking, lack of exercise, and stress. The major risk factors are high blood pressure, tobacco addiction, high blood cholesterol, diabetes and obesity. These result in various long-term disease processes, culminating in high mortality rates attributable to stroke, heart attack, tobacco- and nutrition-induced cancers, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, renal failure, and many others. As all the disease development due to life style changes are purely individual based, no other systems can provide a clear prediction of what disease this patient can develop. But, in Ayurveda by considering his prakruthi and the life style (ahara and vihara) Physicians can easily tell the further developments the person can. In the management of lifestyle diseases, Ayurveda offers various regimens including Dinacharya (daily regimen), Ritucharya (seasonal regimen), Panchakarma (five detoxification and bio-purification therapies), and Rasayana (rejuvenation) therapies.

Depression and Memory Loss : Major depression is a serious condition where a person is not only in a depressed mood but also has feelings of guilt, hopelessness, loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities. According to Ayurveda, most memory problems are related to either Kapha dosha, with its dense qualities, or Vata dosha, with its light and airy qualities. Stagnation of Kapha typically results in a heavy feeling and a dull mind. Recognizing depression in the elderly starts with knowing the signs and symptoms. Depression red flags include:

  • Sadness
  • Fatigue
  • Abandoning or losing interest in hobbies or other pleasurable pastimes
  • Social withdrawal and isolation (reluctance to be with friends, engage in activities, or leave home)

All factors, that are responsible for aggravation of vata and pitta ,along with environmental and dietary factors play an important role in sleep disturbances.

Are you feeling alone ?
Elderly patients living with their family members may face fewer problems when comparedto others who are living alone. Becauses physical, economical and social health care services are provided by the family members. Due to changing phenomenon in India like nuclearfamily system and urban migration of the people, the rural elderly people are the most sufferers due to absence of family support. Physical limitations and lack of interest in having meal is commonly seen in elderly people. Some elderly person living alone, even do not prepare and eat proper meal that may result into malnutrition problems. Loss of key support like death of spouse/ siblings, retirement, relocation and financial deterioration etc. may take place during old age.
